It's not as simple as you have thought.

Narwhal....has always been a fascinating animal -- a whale with a super long tusk. I have always thought that it is a mystical animal which only appear in moby dick kind of stories until Sam told me about it. However, after reading today's New York Times, I was fascinated. They reveal that the tusk on the Narwhal is not only for wooing females, defending their babies and establishing dominance in social hierachies, poking the seabed for food and so on...Recently a team of scientists from Havard and the National Institute of Standards and Technology made a startling discovery: The tusk, which is also Narwhal's left tooth, is an extremely acute sense organ of exceptional size and sensitivity, that lets the animal measure minute changes in water temperature, pressure and makeup. This makes the living appendage one of the planet's most remarkable, and one that in some ways outdoes its own mythology.
I was thinking that this might be a interesting piece of information that you might like to know..I didn't bore you, did I? ^^ Personally, I find it somewhat interesting.
